Sophomore Summer Reading List

1984
By George Orwell
Genre: Science Fiction
Big Brother may not be watching you, but he is definitely watching Winston Smith, a low-level Ministry of Truth worker whose job, ironically, is to destroy and rewrite news articles, switching facts and figures so they align with the view of The Party and keep citizens ignorant of the truth. In fact, in this futuristic society, the state’s mottos declare War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, and Ignorance Is Strength. History and memory have been actively erased and rewritten to support the omnipotent and infallible state and its pronouncements. Disturbed by this deception, Winston begins to think independently and enters into a forbidden love affair with a co-worker Julia. Together they begin to plot an unlikely rebellion against The Party. Even though we are decades past 1984, the novel remains a bleak and shadowy forewarning of what might someday occur.
