Set in Paris during the first half of the 1800’s, Les Miserables follows characters who desperately want lives for themselves. Many of the characters are, as the title suggests, miserable. Imprisoned, orphaned, homeless, they suffer and struggle. Yet, their compelling stories intertwine and progress to strike the reader with man’s capacity for greatness and destruction. This book requires a commitment—one that rewards the reader in the end.
