Now is the Time for Running
By Michael Williams
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Zimbabwe, Africa. Current day. Imagine witnessing the brutal beatings and murders of your family and village. All you have left is your brother, Innocent, who is older than you but has the mind of a child. With a homemade soccer ball and Innocent’s “special box,” Deo and Innocent head to South Africa to search for peace and the possibility of finding the father they never knew. The trek from Zimbabwe to South Africa is very difficult—it includes crossing a hazardous river and dashing through a dangerous animal preserve. The novel on touches topics such as political cruelty, refugee abuse, drug addiction, soccer, and a young boy devoted to his mentally disabled brother. This is a fabulous piece of historical fiction, emotionally moving and fast-paced.
