The Pregnancy Project

By Gaby Rodriguez

Genre: Non-Fiction/Memoir

Gaby Rodriguez made national headlines in 2011 when, as a seventeen-year-old high school senior from Toppenish, Washington, she revealed she had faked a pregnancy for a class project. The Pregnancy Project is her true story. Telling only her mother, her boyfriend, and a few school administrators, Gaby spent six months as a pregnant teenager, observing the reactions of friends, family, and community members. Would they still respect this honor student or would they begin to treat her differently? The product of a strained family with a history of teenage pregnancies, Gaby wanted to expose the stereotypes of pregnant teens. Hoping to share her findings with her classmates, she never dreamed she’d be a guest on Good Morning America beginning a national dialogue on this social issue. The Pregnancy Project is Gaby’s story of rising above the shadow of her family’s past and becoming an inspirational teenage activist.
