The Running Dream

By Wendelin Van Drannen

Genre: Realistic Fiction

16 year-old Jessica Carlisle is a good runner on her high school’s track team, and then the unthinkable happens. After a track meet, the van her team is riding in gets hit by a car. The accident kills her team member and Jessica’s leg is so mangled that it must be amputated. In the first chapter she wakes up in the hospital, and the rest of the novel takes us through how she copes with this tragedy. Will she ever walk again? What about her dream to run again? You don’t have to be an athlete to want to cheer Jessica on and watch her move from coping to hoping. This is an inspiring novel that is easy to read, and it will make you think about faith in oneself, determination, and the meaning of friendship.
